Project ShaqBox Trivia: Among Mets with at least 50 career games played in the month of August, the man with the second-highest batting average is… Roger McDowell?

It’s true. The reliever didn’t get a lot of at-bats, obviously, but he was 2-for-6 as a Met in the month of August, with both hits coming in 1985. First was a single off Warren Brusstar of the Cubs in the seventh inning of a tie game on August 9 at Shea Stadium. Lenny Dykstra and Wally Backman followed with singles of their own, and McDowell scored the tiebreaking and eventual winning run — one of six runs McDowell scored in his career. Two weeks later, on August 25, McDowell collected one of his six career RBI with a double off Tim Stoddard as the Mets bludgeoned the Padres, 9-3, for Dwight Gooden’s 20th win of the his legendary campaign.
